Recognition Matters

Design shapes how we live, work and connect, underpinning the systems, environments and experiences of everyday life. Practised with intent and imagination, it responds to complex challenges, expresses cultural value and opens new possibilities across social, economic and environmental domains.

Established in 1996, the DIA Hall of Fame recognises this profound impact. Now in its 29th year, it has honoured over 140 Australian designers and leaders whose vision and legacy have shaped and elevated the nation’s design culture.

On Thursday 26 March, the Design Institute of Australia welcomed guests from across the design community to the National Gallery of Victoria for the 2025 DIA Hall of Fame Celebration. The evening recognised five outstanding inductees: Professor N’arwee’t Carolyn Briggs AM, Paul Charlwood, Paul Huxtable, Geraldine Maher and Cal Swann. Spanning design education, industrial design, interior design and typography, their contributions reflect the breadth of the profession and its enduring influence on Australia’s cultural and built environment.

Set within the NGV Garden Restaurant, the celebration brought together DIA Hall of Fame luminaries, inductees, their families, and leaders from industry, education and government. More than a celebration of individual achievement, the evening spoke to the strength of Australia’s design community, one built and sustained by people, partnerships, industry and institutions working together.

In her address, DIA CEO Simone LeAmon reflected on design as a collective endeavour, realised through trust, collaboration and shared ambition. This is why the DIA Hall of Fame Celebration matters, it reminds us that design and designers flourish when there is a strong, connected design ecosystem.

The evening concluded with the presentation of the 2025 Graduate of the Year, Madeline Lester Prize to Lauren Roberts, recognising exceptional emerging talent and signalling the strength of the next generation.

The DIA extends its sincere thanks to our event partners Schiavello, Clipsal by Schneider Electric and Dulux for their support in making the evening possible. Our gratitude also to Diadem for producing the visual program, honouring all DIA Hall of Fame luminaries and to the NGV hosting this special occasion.

As we reflect on a memorable night, we are reminded that recognition matters. It ensures that the stories of designers are seen, valued and shared, inspiring future generations and strengthening design in Australia.
