A New Chapter for DIA: AGM 2025 Marks Significant Milestones
The Design Institute of Australia held its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, 27 November 2025 at 4pm, marking a watershed moment in the organisation's 80-year history. With 68 members participating both in person at the Brickworks Melbourne Design Studio and online, the meeting demonstrated strong member engagement as DIA enters an exciting new phase of growth and professional recognition.
Strengthening Our Governance Framework
A highlight of the AGM was the unanimous adoption of significant constitutional amendments that position DIA at the forefront of professional design representation in Australia. The updated Constitution introduces modernised membership classes that align precisely with the Australian Bureau of Statistics' OSCA (Occupation Standard Classification for Australia) profiles for the design profession. This strategic alignment ensures DIA's membership structure authentically reflects the full spectrum of contemporary design practice, from emerging designers to established industry leaders across all design disciplines.
Equally significant was the approval of constitutional provisions empowering DIA to administer a professional standards scheme. This landmark change represents years of advocacy work and positions DIA to deliver enhanced professional accountability, consumer protection, and industry recognition. The ability to administer professional standards elevates the design profession's standing alongside other regulated professions and provides members with strengthened professional credibility and protection.
Welcoming New Leadership
The AGM announced the appointment of Director Rowen Wagner to the DIA Board. Rowen brings valuable expertise and fresh perspective that will strengthen the Board's capacity to guide DIA's strategic direction and represent our diverse membership base.
The 2026 appointment of the National Advisory Council was also announced, continuing DIA's reach and capability to connect with design communities across every state and territory. This advisory structure ensures regional voices contribute meaningfully to national advocacy and policy development.
Celebrating Service and Embracing Change
Following the formal AGM proceedings, and lead by current DIA President Ryan Russell, members gathered for networking drinks that honoured departing leadership while welcoming the next generation. The evening provided a fitting opportunity to acknowledge Director Louise Williamson's outstanding service to the Board, where her strategic insight and dedication have been instrumental in advancing DIA's mission and influence.
Special recognition was given to CEO Jo Kellock, whose exceptional leadership has transformed DIA through a period of significant challenge and growth. Jo's tenure has seen the organisation achieve financial stability, strengthen its advocacy voice, expand membership services, and establish DIA as Australia's authoritative voice for design professionals. Her legacy includes the Define Design campaign, enhanced professional development programs, and the groundwork for the professional standards scheme now enabled through constitutional reform.
The gathering warmly welcomed incoming CEO Simone LeAmon, who commences on 12 January 2026. Simone brings extensive experience in professional association leadership and a proven track record in member engagement, advocacy, and organisational development. Her appointment ensures continuity of DIA's strategic direction while bringing fresh energy and perspective to our next chapter.
Looking Forward
These governance reforms and leadership transitions represent far more than administrative changes—they signal DIA's commitment to continuous evolution in service of design professionals across Australia. With strengthened constitutional foundations, renewed Board leadership, an expanded National Advisory Council, and dynamic executive guidance, DIA is exceptionally well-positioned to advance its advocacy, professional development, accreditation programs, and member services throughout 2026 and beyond.
The strong attendance at this year's AGM, combined with unanimous support for constitutional reform, demonstrates our membership's confidence in DIA's direction and commitment to the profession's future. Together, we are building a stronger, more influential organisation that truly represents and elevates Australian design.
