Celebrating 40 years of industrial design

The 2016 End of Year INDEX QUT Industrial Design Graduate Exhibition on the 8th of December was an extra special double celebration, as it was combined with QUT celebrating 40 years of industrial design education.

The cold drinks and canapés were flowing on a very muggy hot Brisbane evening at the newly opened former Army Barracks buildings which have been re-purposed into extensive studio and exhibition spaces at the QUT Creative Industries Precinct Z6 Kelvin Grove Campus. The atmosphere inside the contemporary exhibition space and design work showcased was just as hot as the outside air temperature, with the cool air-conditioning inside steaming up the glass walls, although not dampening the spirits of the design community inside.

The evening didn't fail to meet expectations, showcasing 46 individual graduate projects, models and prototypes, and discussions with Brisbane’s design community. It was further reinforcement of the calibre of design talent which continues to emerge from QUT.

The Industrial Design DIA Professional Encouragement Award this year was proudly awarded by long term DIA QLD Branch Councillor Robert Geddes FDIA to Dylan Sheppard.  Dylan was awarded this prize as he had not only demonstrated a high level of competency academically but equally had demonstrated the potential to play an active and valuable role in the design community, good studentship and professionalism.

The night continued to shine light on the achievements of many contributors, including many DIA Qld Fellows, Members and supporters who have worked alongside QUT over the past 40 years to raise the profile of professional design locally, nationally and internationally.

Outstanding service awards were presented on stage by Andrew Scott FDIA to past DIA QLD & National office bearers Dennis Hardy (40 years), Prof Vesna Popovic FDIA (33 years), Robert Geddes FDIA (22 years), Gordon Stuart FDIA (23 years), Dr Rebekah Davis MDIA (10 years) and past DIA members Steve Curran and Greg Meyer.

Alongside their awards, we heard from Dennis Hardy who reflected on the history of the Industrial Design course at the then QIT (Queensland Institute of Technology) 40 years ago, and also from Prof Vesna Popovic FDIA who spoke on her many reflections and current achievements in teaching, research and practice.
