Membership benefits

  • Student membership
    $125

Student membership costs $125 and lasts the full duration of your course. That is, a one-off payment will buy you your DIA membership until you graduate. Payment can be in a lump sum, or in quarterly or monthly instalments over the first year of membership.

To be a student member of the DIA, your course needs to be recognised by the Australian Federal Government’s Australian Qualification Framework.

To be eligible for professional membership upon graduation, you must be enrolled in either an Advanced Diploma or Degree course (that is, courses rated AQF 6 and 7). The only exception is for design disciplines where the highest undergraduate qualification is an AQF 5 Diploma. This typically applies to digital media, furniture design and interior decoration. In each instance, upon graduation you will be eligible to be a professional member of the DIA, initially as a Graduate member.

If you are studying a Certificate IV course in design with an AQF 4 rating, you are eligible to be a DIA Student member and upon graduation you will be eligible to be a DIA Affiliate member.

All international students studying design courses in Australia (AFQ 4 and above) are eligible and welcomed as DIA Student members.

Student members gain access to all DIA events at member prices, have access to tailored DIA resources and are encouraged to actively participate in DIA events in their state or territory. Student members are not eligible to vote at official meetings such as the Annual General Meeting.

To be a DIA Graduate member, you need a qualification recognised by the Australian Federal Government’s Australian Qualification Framework. DIA Graduate members need to hold either an Advanced Diploma or a Degree (that is, courses rated AQF 6 and 7) in design. The only exception is for design disciplines where the highest undergraduate qualification is an AQF 5 Diploma. This typically applies to digital media, furniture design and interior decoration. • Associate membership
    $350

We have recently simplified our Associate category of membership. All pre-existing Associate memberships will be unaffected by these changes.

DIA Associate membership costs $350 per year. Payment can be in a lump sum, or in quarterly or monthly instalments.

Associate membership is only available to qualified designers who graduated at least two years ago.

To be a DIA Associate member, you need a qualification recognised by the Australian Federal Government’s Australian Qualification Framework. DIA Associate members need to hold either an Advanced Diploma or a Degree in design (that is, courses rated AQF 6 and 7). The only exception is for design disciplines where the highest undergraduate qualification is an AQF 5 Diploma. This typically applies to digital media, furniture design and interior decoration. If you hold a Certificate IV in design with an AQF 4 rating, you are eligible to be a DIA Affiliate member. In some circumstances, a portfolio of work will be accepted in lieu of formal qualifications after discussion with the DIA National Office.

Associate membership is ideal for designers employed in consultancies and design departments, for staff in university and TAFE design departments, and for designers employed in other areas of business. It is tailored for professional designers who do not require the profile and full benefits offered by DIA Member (MDIA) status.

Associate members gain access to all DIA events at member prices, have access to tailored DIA resources and are encouraged to actively participate in DIA events in their state or territory. Associate members are eligible to serve on DIA Branch Councils but are not eligible to be on the DIA National Council and do not have voting rights at official DIA meetings such as the Annual General Meeting.

  • MDIA membership
    $595

We have recently simplified our Member (MDIA) category of membership. All pre-existing MDIA memberships will be unaffected by these changes.

MDIA membership is for designers who want to be recognised as experienced professionals, who want to raise their profile by using the ‘MDIA’ post nominal after their name, and who value the opportunity to be eligible to become an Accredited Designer TM. MDIA membership costs $595 per year. Payment can be in a lump sum, or in quarterly or monthly instalments.

MDIA membership is only available to qualified designers who, since graduation, have had at least five years of experience with a recognised design individual, firm or business. To be a MDIA member, you also need a qualification recognised by the Australian Federal Government’s Australian Qualification Framework. MDIA members need to hold either an Advanced Diploma or a Degree in design (that is, courses rated AQF 6 and 7). The only exception is for design disciplines where the highest undergraduate qualification is an AQF 5 Diploma. This typically applies to digital media, furniture design and interior decoration. In some circumstances, a portfolio of work will be accepted in lieu of formal qualifications after discussion with the DIA National Office.

MDIA members gain access to all DIA events at member prices, have full access to the resources and events of the DIA, and are eligible to serve on both the DIA Branch and National Council and have voting rights at official DIA meetings such as the Annual General Meeting.

  • Design Practice memberships
    Group discounts for your team

Design Practice membership is ideal for design consultancies and design departments. It aligns your business with the professional standards and aims of the professional body and provides access to the DIA professional network for your staff.

We have recently made significant changes to the structure, flexibility and discounts available through our Design Practice memberships. We invite all current practice members and people who own or work in practices to consider our new Design Practice membership.

Our new Design Practice memberships come in three tiers: Small, Medium and Large. Each has a fixed price and includes up to a maximum number of memberships at a significant discount.

So long as the principals (as defined below) are eligible to be a DIA Associate or MDIA members in their own right, the whole practice can be a member.

    Design Practice Options:

    Small Practice memberships

Small Memberships cost $900 per annum. Payment can be in a lump sum, or in quarterly or monthly instalments.

    Small Practice Memberships provide:

    • A maximum of 2 individual MDIA memberships for Principals plus
    • 2 additional staff members can attend DIA events at member prices

If a practice has more principals who wish to be individual members, they need to join independently.

Become a member - Small Practice

    Medium Practice memberships

Medium Practice Memberships cost $1800 per annum. Payment can be in a lump sum, or in quarterly or monthly instalments.

    Medium Practice Memberships provide:

    • A maximum of 4 individual MDIA memberships for Principals plus
    • 6 additional staff members can attend DIA events at member prices

If a practice has more principals who wish to be individual members, they need to join independently.

Become a member - Medium Practice

    Large Practice memberships

Large Practice Memberships cost $3,600 per annum. Payment can be in a lump sum, or in quarterly or monthly instalments.

    Large Practice Memberships provide:

    • A maximum of 8 individual MDIA memberships for Principals plus
    • 10 additional staff members can attend DIA events at member prices

If a practice has more principals who wish to be individual members, they need to join independently. Very large businesses with offices in more than one location can elect to have one ‘large’ membership or separate memberships (of the relevant scale/s) for each office.

Become a member - Large Practice

    Principals

Principals are deemed to be principals/owners or department/section heads of a practice and need to be approved as either a MDIA or a DIA Associate member in their own right. Each practice needs to have at least one approved Principal and this person’s membership is not transferable. If a principal leaves the practice, the practice is required to have at least one MDIA or a DIA Associate member as part of the Design Practice membership.

Only the approved Principal/s have the right to use the appropriate DIA post nominal.

Ideally a ‘Principal’ would be an owner or Director of the practice, however if designers are employed within a multidisciplinary company, the ‘Principals’ can be the most senior designers or design specialists in the company.

    Employees

Design practice employees who are eligible to be DIA members, but are not principals/owners of the business they work for, are free to enjoy the benefits that come with being an employee of a Design Practice, or can choose to join the DIA in their own right. The latter is outside the Design Practice membership and does not attract a discount.

    Benefits

Design Practice memberships deliver significant cost savings and a package of benefits including:

    • Staff access to DIA events at member prices.
    • Staff access to DIA member-only events.
    • Rights for the practice to be promoted as a ‘DIA Design Practice’ member.
    • Use of the words ‘DIA Design Practice member’ on signature blocks and business cards.
    • Profiling of the practice on the Find a Designer page of the DIA website.
    • Free of charge jobs advertisements on the DIA website.
  • Affiliate membership
    $350

Affiliate members are typically people who service and support the design sector or are simply people interested in design. The DIA welcomes people associated with the design community to become Affiliate members as it provides opportunities to connect with Australia’s designers and the national design conversation.

Unlike the DIA’s professional membership categories (that is Graduate, Associate and MDIA members) there are no pre-qualification requirements to become an Affiliate membership. This category is ideal for people associated with the design or who have some training in design but have not yet reached the pre-qualification requirements of the professional membership categories.

    Affiliate Membership offers:

    • Formal association with the Australian design community.
    • Access to all DIA programs and events at DIA member rates.
