Bricks and mortar in your pocket. Those fiendish people at Apple have released yet another reason why they think you ‘must have’ an iPhone – a new, free iPhone application that helps you visit many of the major buildings of the world – whether you’re there or not.

The new application (or ‘app’ to those in the know) is called Architecture, and provides a pocket resource guide of selected international architectural masterpieces of the 20th and 21st Centuries.

Just choose your country or city, and your Architecture-enabled iPhone will instantly tell you what notable buildings there are nearby, show you a picture, give you the GPS co-ordinates, Google street maps if available, website addresses, the story of the building and its architect, and how to walk or drive there.

270 cities, 165 architects, 1000 internally stored pictures so you don’t have to pay data connection time; everything from Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe to Sanaa, OMA and Frank Lloyd Wright; classic icons to hidden architectural gems and oddities.

Reports vary on the app's user-friendliness, but on the face of it, it would seem pretty useful for travellers as well as designers.

Architecture can also be used in flight mode or on the iPod Touch.

Nice touch indeed.
