SEMINAR 1 JULY 21

JOOST BAKKER

Greenhouse

Joost Bakker emigrated from Holland at the age of nine. With no formal study – unless you call socialising study – Joost started off as a self taught horticultural artist (he inherited his artistic talents from his Mum). This led to installations, marquees at the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, fitouts of restaurants and his prolific installation ‘Dry’ at the republic Tower’s Queen Street corner in which 45 tubs framed dried willow branches sourced from the family farm in Monbulk. Joost is a discipline-crossing creative and visionary. Highly regarded for his distinctive aesthetic and design ingenuity. Joost has been commissioned to create large scale public installations, vertical gardens, event spaces and hospitality interiors throughout Australia. Joost is driven by a genuine passion for simply doing things better – and opening a public dialogue about sustainable design practises in the process.

STEPHEN CAMERON

Hassell Architects

Stephen has been an architect for nearly as long as he wanted to be an architect. Growing up from the age of two in what may have been the only Modernist house in Toowoomba, then going direct to QUT before moving into private practice, Stephen’s ideas of what an architect might be have been subject to constant change. From an initial enthusiasm for the lone, bespectacled prototype Stephen has developed an approach to architecture that is unconstrained by conventional notions of singularity and authorship. Stephen founded his practice Ark in 2004, and over the following six years produced a wide range of works including the aesthetic dental clinic “Aesthetic Excellence” (AIA Qld Awards commendation 2006), and the events venue / shared creative studio Lightspace (IDEA commercial projects and sustainable projects shortlist 2010, AIA Brisbane Awards commendation 2011). In 2010 he took up an “irresistible” offer to move to HASSELL, where he is putting his collaborative experience to good use on design projects ranging in scale from a pro-bono youth support centre to a 30-storey office building, with his first built work at HASSELL being the brand new Esquire restaurant in the city.

ROY SCHACK

Schack Fine Furniture

‘Its hard not to be influenced in some way when growing up surrounded by Danish design. It took many years of doing a job I knew I didn’t want to do, before taking a bit of responsibility for my life and asking myself the tough question. What now?’ Roy Schack began his adult working life in the merchant banking industry, and after 10 years decided to take a side step into the creative life that is wood work and furniture design. Trained at the Sturt School for Wood in the Southern Highland of New South Wales, Roy made the move to Queensland in 1995 where he established a workshop in Woolloongabba showcasing his hand crafted pieces, as well as operating The Brisbane School of Fine Woodwork. Roy’s practice revolves around a healthy balance of teaching woodwork to adult students as well as producing commissioned pieces for private clients. He has exhibited widely over the last 16 years with the most recent exhibition being with the Danish Cabinet Makers Association in Copenhagen. He is passionate about quality work, and worries about taking himself too seriously. Roy now operates from a purpose built studio in beautiful Samford Valley.

SEMINAR 4 OCTOBER 20

SONNY VANDERVELDE

Sonny Photos

Sonny Vandevelde is a Belgian/Australian fashion photographer. As a child he became intrigued with the mechanics of an old Kodak Box Brownie, and the images it produced, and has been snapping photos ever since. His professional career evolved from leisure – on the Australian ski slopes, shooting free-style skiers. Before long, magazines and ski companies were taking notice of Sonny’s high energy, dynamic action photos. From here, Sonny transitioned, through companies like Quicksilver, into what he refers to as “lifestyle fashion” photography. A blend of natural poses and energy as opposed to the static posing of models in studios at the time, this piqued the interest of magazines such as Dolly and Cosmo, and steered him more towards fashion photography. After building a solid client base in Australia, Sonny returned to his country of birth and began to expand into the lucrative European market with editorial and advertising work. Dividing his time now between the continents, Sonny’s backstage photography has become his calling card. Distinctively quirky, vibrant and colourful, he shoots all the major fashion shows around the globe, & regularly appear in titles such New York Times, V magazine, Grazia, Vogue, and Harpers. It’s a fast-paced lifestyle, but Sonny’s doing what he loves – making beautiful pictures.
